Dan's Accident

Dan slammed his foot into the ball, managing only to nail another player in the stomach. There was only a fraction of a second to react—players from both teams were streaming at him like wasps from a broken nest. He took aim and kicked again. He was no luckier; the ball hit an Anderson player in the face and once again the ball was in front of him; he caught a brief glimpse of a bloody nose. Desperate, he hit the ball with a running kick. But an Anderson player kicked from another direction at exactly the same time. Caught off guard, Dan tumbled to the ground on his right side with the Anderson player sandwiched between his knees. Another Anderson player, Number 10, tripped over the first and landed hard on Dan’s knee; he felt the knee tear and heard the snap as his femur gave way. Another Anderson player landed on top of Number 10 and Dan felt his skin rip. He looked up just in time to see Number 10 jerk away with his hands over his stomach. He didn’t hear the scream. He didn’t hear anything. He looked at the blazing September sun and all went black.
