The Bird Dream

"Happened right in front of me!"

Dan found the button and lowered the bed. He tried turning on his side but something pinned him on his back. He moaned and shut his eyes.

"Our star midfielder Dan here had the ball and…"

Dan drifted off. In his mind’s eye, he saw a giant bird circling above him. The hideous creature was cawing aggressively.

"…so he goes down with this Anderson player wrapped between his legs and…"

The bird dived. Each rippling feather was longer than Dan’s arm.

"…so two guys at once land on top of Dan’s leg. I heard it snap, and then…"

There was no one around and no place to hide. He ran. The bird tracked every move, toying with him.

"I didn’t quite see it, but anyway Dan’s leg bone came out all jagged-like and just stabbed this Anderson guy right in the stomach. He was Number 10 and the bone did a bull’s-eye right in the middle of the zero. Served the guy right for…"

The bird moved in for the kill. Dan fell and covered his face. He screamed.

"Are you all right?" asked an anxious Peter. Dan looked around. The bishop was gone.

"You look like you’ve been having a nightmare," said Peter. "You’re mom’s back."
