(About Dan Home) (Last) (Next) More Verses"Dan, that's wonderful! Are you in your choir at church?" asked Mike. "No. I don’t have a good voice." "I don’t agree. Here, let me try that guitar for a minute. Ok, now sing it again. Let's see, you were in G. Ok, I want to try some stuff on the guitar. Let me give you an intro, and then you jump in. If you can't tell when then I've done a lousy job." Dan sang again. Mike's guitar playing was unlike Dan's. Instead of just G, D and C, Mike was all over the frets. The music was right where Dan needed it for his singing, but now the guitar came alive. The song had an entirely different feel, far more lively and interesting. Halfway through, Ed disappeared and then reappeared carrying a large string base, which he added to the accompaniment. At the end, Dan motioned for Mike to continue playing. He'd remembered the second and third verses. I found another girl, and this one I did love I looked deep down inside her, and peered inside her soul I found a lot worth loving, and helped her find it too But then she went without me, and I was alone again Oh woman, oh woman, you do this to me What will you do to other boys like me? Oh woman, oh woman, you do this to me How many boys have you captured before. And then I met a third lass, with hair of golden flax She loved me and she cared for me, and I was in her arms We spent our years together, forever and so forth And finally we had each other, and we wedded on that night Oh woman, oh woman, you do this to me What will you do to other boys like me? Oh woman, oh woman, you do this to me How many boys have you captured before. Mike concluded the song with a great guitar flourish. Dan was delighted by that wonderful feeling that comes when people get together to make music, a feeling of being at one with each other in perfect synchronization. They all laughed. "It's pretty sophomoric poetry," said Dan, "but you have to remember I was a sophomore when I wrote it!" "Dan, don't put yourself down!" said Mike. "It was great!" "That's wonderful guitar playing," said Dan. "And dad, I can't believe you play bass. That's brilliant!" Ed smiled. "Thanks, Dan. We enjoy playing together." Ed picked up the bass rather gingerly and set it in a corner where it wouldn't fall down. Mike jumped in. "We've been playing together for three years now. I've had my group going for about ten years, but three years ago, our bass player died of AIDS. Ed and I had just started our business together, so I taught him bass. He picked it up right away." Ok, so this is where the fun stuff ends and the serious stuff begins, thought Dan. |
