(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) Not Now!"Dad, I don’t have time!" Phillip sulked in the doorway, his glasses askew, his face defiant. He was framed against the early light of a glorious mid-April Saturday morning. He was impatient, fingering his water bottle, adjusting his fanny pack, looking at his watch. He took off his glasses to adjust the strap around his head that held them on. He didn’t wait for his father to reply before continuing. "If I don’t get my run in now, I won’t have time after work!" "Son, all I’m asking is if you wanted to go with me to practice driving in the mountains." Lance stood by the stairs with the morning Daily Camera sports section in his hands. He seemed surprised by Phillip’s vehemence. "Why the sudden emotion? It’s a perfectly reasonable request!" "Dad, you know I run on Saturdays! Every Saturday! We’ve got a meet coming up against Boulder High and I wanna try some stuff Coach Johnson told me. I’ve already worked out what I want to do today and if I don’t go…" Lance was turning red. "Can’t you make an exception? I want to talk with you while we drive. Just maybe three hours? We’ll be back long before noon." Phillip looked like he’d been asked to build one of the pyramids by himself. "Dad," he whined. "Look, maybe with a little planning. Tomorrow after church, ok? But I got things I gotta do today. I gotta run. I gotta work. I gotta do homework. You always get mad at me when I don’t do what I’m s’posed to, and now you want me to dump it for a group hug in the mountains." "All right, already!" shouted Lance. "Go ahead!" He threw the paper down, his face red. He folded his arms and faced his son. "Go!" |
