About Series Home |
(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) A Tentative TruceBy mutual agreement, Margo worked on Lance and Carmen worked on Phillip. Martin stayed out of the way. Phillip and Lance did not talk to each other all day. The air was still tense as the family sat down for Monday dinner. Martin volunteered to offer the blessing on the food just so they could get started. Margo and Carmen kept glancing at each other. Both Lance and Phillip toyed with their food. Finally, halfway through his potato, Lance cleared his throat. Margo and Carmen exchanged glances again; Margo looked hopeful. Lance looked down. Then he looked at the ceiling. He glanced at Margo but quickly looked away. He fixed his gaze on Martin for several long seconds. Finally, he brought himself to look at Phillip. "Phillip, I’m sorry for our misunderstanding yesterday." He waited. Margo held her breath. Martin studied his peas. Phillip looked at the wall. Carmen stared grimly at Phillip. Phillip put down his knife and glanced briefly at his father. He wiped his lips with his napkin and took a sip of milk, then wiped his lips again. He stared at the centerpiece. "Sorry Dad," he said in a small voice. "I guess we got carried away." Carmen and Margo looked as though the happy reign of the Millennium had just begun. Martin sighed and went back to eating. "So, uh, maybe you’ll consider some more driving lessons?" Phillip’s shoulders sagged. This wasn’t part of the bargain he’d made with his grandmother. He couldn’t bring himself to look at his father. "Uh, yeah, sure, I guess so." He paused, thinking. "How about if my next one is with mom, ok?" Lance studied the overcrowded sideboard. He looked disgusted. "Yeah, sure, why not," he said. Both father and son declined dessert. |
