Reporting to Melanie

"Hon, I need you to stack…oh, the Airedale couple is back. Just a minute." Mrs. Hardesty hurried to the front of the store, wiping her hands on her apron. Once again, she knocked a sack of birdseed loose as she rushed by. Phillip cringed, but the bag didn’t break when it hit the floor. He ran to put it back into place.

"You shoulda seen the look on my dad’s face when I told him I wasn’t doing Scouts anymore!" said Phillip in a hushed voice when he came back. "Thought he was gonna pop a vein!"

Melanie pondered this. "Do you think you can make it stick?"

"Yeah, too many people saw. Brother Sam was a witness and so was Brother Dean—he’s the assistant Scoutmaster."

"Wow. I’ll bet that was quite a scene."

"I still have to do the Duty to God stuff, but that’s all church stuff, like I’d do anyway, so that’s easy. Like I have to keep a journal, things like that. I feel like I’m an inch taller! At least I did until after school."

"What happened? You looked sad when you came in today."

Phillip got down on his hands and knees to approach the puppy in the lowest cage. He gently stroked the dog before pulling him out. Melanie played with the dog while Phillip cleaned the cage.

"Got an e-mail from Richard addressed to me personally. He’s only allowed to write one e-mail a week, so it’s to the whole family, but there was an extra e-mail today. I knew something was up ‘cause it came today; his e-mails usually come on Mondays."

He pulled his glove off and pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket. "Here, you might as well read it. Just promise me you won’t tell anyone, ok?"
