Richard Writes

          Dear Little Brother,

I had to think for a couple days about whether to tell you, but I think it’s probably best that you know. Mom wrote me two e-mails Sunday. There was the official one, full of all the upbeat stuff, then there was a second one I guess she didn’t let anyone else see. So don’t tell Dad, ok? Or Martin.

She says Dad’s business is failing. She says most of the family savings is tied up in the business, so she has nightmares about being thrown out on the street. I guess that won’t really happen because Dad always said the house is paid for, but it must really be eating at Dad. You know Dad.

She also says you and Dad are having a rough time right now. I went through that, too. I guess it’s just part of being 16 in the Maceda household. You probably don’t remember, but I ran away from home once. That was before Grams lived with us—you were staying with them for a week on the old farm in Ohio, so you didn’t get to see all the high drama. But then I figured it would be easier to get along by going along. That seems to work pretty well with Dad. Just a word to the wise, my younger brother? I think I know what you’re going through, believe it or not. I’ll pray for you.

Elder Maceda ("Saint Richard" to you)
