(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) The Day After"Phillip! Phillip!" Phillip turned around. Along with the rest of the Park track team, he had just completed warm-ups on a sunny, unseasonably-warm Thursday afternoon in late April. The smell of spring was in the air and the grass near the bleachers needed cutting. He was slipping off his warm-up jacket as Melanie ran up to him. "Hi. I didn’t see you in English. Or anytime today," said Phillip. "Field trip. To CU." "Oh." He paused. "Are you ok…after last night?" He studied her. She averted her gaze. "I’m sorry, Phillip. I know you and your dad don’t get along, but…I mean…wow." Phillip drew in a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "I didn’t think he’d yell at me on my birthday, right in front of you and Grant. Of course, Grant’s seen it before. Right, Grant?" "Right what?" asked Grant as he joined them. "Last night," said Melanie. "Oh," said Grant. "That. Well, he and Phillip go at it all the time. I just wait for it to end and we usually retreat to Phillip’s room. Of course," he continued, "Phillip doesn’t exactly help matters, do you?" He looked at Phillip. Phillip looked away. He saw Coach Johnson gathering the runners who would compete first. Phillip’s 3200-meter event was last. "Where is everybody?" asked Melanie. "There aren’t very many people here." "There’s just two schools, Anderson and us. It doesn’t count for records or anything, but there wasn’t a big meet this week, so we’re doing this little one. Practice for Regionals," reported Phillip. "Ok. If you say so." Melanie shrugged her shoulders. "Have you figured out what happened? I mean, to your site?" asked Grant. "No. Like you said, it’s really cheap security." Phillip was watching Coach Johnson. "What are you guys talking about?" asked Melanie. Before Phillip could reply, Grant took over. "Only that someone’s hacking Phillip’s web site. Must be. All the stuff he had up there about the church just disappeared. Nothing else. All the track stuff is ok." "That’s weird," responded Melanie. "I’ll reload it tonight. Hey, I gotta go. It’s time to start." Phillip jogged off. "Good luck!" shouted Grant and Melanie simultaneously. They headed for the bleachers. |
