(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) Turning Left"Watch it! The whole family’s in the car!" barked Lance. "Leave him be!" They drove in silence. Phillip managed a left turn onto 30th without incident. He poked north. "Phillip, you can go faster. Martin, stop playing with your seatbelt and put it back on." "Honey, let him get there at his own rate." "Phillip watch out for that car turning left. PHILLIP!" yelled Lance. "I SEE IT!" shouted Phillip. "LEAVE ME ALONE!" "I can’t let you just plow into him." "Dad, you’re making me nervous! Stop yelling at me!" "Honey, please let him be; I’m right here beside him." "Martin, put your seat belt back on." "Leave them both be!" commanded Carmen. "I’m trying to help. Phillip, slow down! PHILLIP YOU’VE GOT TO TURN LEFT HERE!" "I KNOW!" "Phillip, wait, honey, there’s a car …" "WATCH OUT!" screamed Lance. * * * Phillip was never able to sort everything into its proper sequence. He turned left going too fast, he knew that. There was a car coming in the other direction; he saw it only milliseconds before impact. Tires screeching on concrete—he remembered that. Worst was the sound: a terrible, sickening metal-on-metal combination of a thud, a bang and a crash—both heard and felt. The incredible BLAM of the airbags. The car lurching sideways and spinning. Glass breaking. His mother screaming. His father shouting and swearing. And Martin. Martin screaming. Blood. Martin’s blood, splattered over everything. Martin… |
