Uncle Bill

Lance numbly retrieved the broom. He swept the glass, the broken frame and the cut-up remains of the photograph into the dust pan. He took the dust pan into the garage and dumped the contents into the trash can. He was about to put the lid back on the trash can, but changed his mind and carefully retrieved a few fragments of the photograph. He took these into the kitchen and laid them on the counter.

It was Lance as a teen at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Uncle Bill was standing behind him.

He picked up a fragment to study it more carefully. Eagle Scout. He’d worked hard under Uncle Bill’s watchful eye. He was so proud that day—thirty years ago. The world was simple; answers were black and white. He knew on that day he would someday marry and be a parent. He’d be the one to break the cycle. He’d teach his children, just like Uncle Bill had taught him. And he made a special vow to himself that day: he’d give one of his children Uncle Bill’s name—William.

"I’m ready, Dad," said Phillip softly.

Lance put the photo fragment on the counter and turned to look at Phillip.

          Phillip William Maceda.

Lance stuffed his emotions in his back pocket, just like Uncle Bill always said to do.

          "Let’s go, son."
