The Mountain Meadows Massacre

Matthew sniggered at Phillip’s outburst. "By the way, how’s your essay coming along? The one that’s due today."

"Fine. I wrote about treating the earth properly—as an example of tolerance for our environment," said Phillip haughtily.

Matthew looked mischevious. "And I wrote about the Mountain Meadows Massacre."

Phillip’s haughtiness evaporated. "You did what? Matthew, that’s rude! It happened way over a hundred years ago and is totally irrelevant!"

It was Matthew’s turn to be haughty. "I expect an A." He turned and went to his seat.

Phillip turned to Melanie indignantly. "He can’t bring that up!"

"Well, apparently he has," she said, looking completely baffled. "So what was the Mountain Meadows Massacre? Why is it so important?"

"I learned a little about it in seminary. It’s like a blot on our history. Some wagon train was going through Utah and things got weird and most of the people in the wagon train got killed. I mean, after all the Mormon pioneers who got killed in Missouri and all! D’ya think Matthew cares about them?"

"Phillip, I have no idea what you’re talking about. What does this have to do with tolerance?"

"He’s going to use it to try to show Mormons are intolerant. That’s what! Melanie, it happened almost a hundred and fifty years ago! One thing that went wrong in Utah and he’s gonna have…"

          "Shhh…it’s time to sit down."

"I can’t believe it," muttered Phillip. "This whole tolerance thing is a disaster."
