No Progress on the Security Front

Phillip opened the door the next evening to find Grant on the porch. Behind him a spectacular early-May sunset lit the heavens. Margo’s honeysuckles made the air sweet. Every window was open to catch the breeze.

"Whew! That’s rough!" gasped Grant. He slipped off his backpack and followed Phillip into the house, wheezing as he went. Wolfgang bounded into the room and pushed his nose into Grant’s hand. Grant responded by scratching the great dog’s chin.

"What’s hard?" asked Phillip. "Why are you panting like Wolfgang? Need some water?"

Grant and Wolfgang followed him into the kitchen. "I’ll take you up on that," said Grant. "I jogged over here. Thought I’d do it to see what it’s like."

Phillip handed him a plastic cup emblazoned with a McDonald’s logo. "See what what’s like?"

"Running." Grant dripped water onto his wet tee shirt and slurped loudly.

"Huh? There’s nothing to it. I did a little warm up today—not much, since the meet was yesterday. About a mile." Phillip knelt to face Wolfgang; he gave the dog a two-handed rub behind the ears. Wolfgang’s tail whacked the refrigerator.

"Do I look like I run?" responded Grant, spreading out his arms. "Flab-R-Us. I can pinch about two inches, see?" He pulled up his tee shirt and showed Phillip.

"Gross," responded Phillip. "Let’s get upstairs before Dad gets home."

Phillip led the way up the stairs. Wolfgang was hard on his heel. Grant followed more slowly. Phillip closed the door after the three were inside his room.

Phillip’s bed was unmade. Running paraphernalia was piled atop the extra chair. Homework covered the floor near the computer. Next to the keyboard a book on HTML was open.

"What’s wrong with Wolfgang? He’s limping," asked Grant, looking around at the mess.

"Nothing. He has arthritis in his hips. How did the pictures turn out?" Phillip sat; he moved the HTML book aside and pulled the keyboard toward him.

Grant unceremoniously dumped the contents of the extra chair to the floor and pulled it beside Phillip. He had to rummage in his backpack to find the digital camera; he pulled out the memory stick and handed it to Phillip. Grant studied the room while Phillip busied himself with the computer.

"What happened to your room? Looks like a tornado hit."

Phillip didn’t look up. "Nothing. I didn’t feel like cleaning up."

Grant was surprised. "Ok. Not like you. Anyway, any more progress on the security front? The Mormon page was gone again last night."
