Sappy Movies

As the credits began to roll, Melanie put her head on Phillip’s shoulder. She reached for his hand.

          "Nice movie," she said dreamily.

          "Kinda sappy," said Phillip.

          "You didn’t like it?"

"It was ok. I think the big guy with the moustache was spineless. Why did she go for him?"

Melanie smiled and stood up. "It’s a chick thing, ok?"

"If you say so. Anyway, no one in the movie had glasses. No one in the movies ever has glasses."

"I saw a movie a couple weeks ago that had a guy with glasses."

          "Was he a big guy?"

"No, he was a computer nerd."

Phillip laughed. "Figures. We have fifteen minutes to catch our bus. We’d better go."

"Oh, that’s right. I forgot. Busses. Rain."

          "Yep, the real world awaits."

"Busses are not the real world. Cars are the real world. Nice, warm, dry cars."

"Busses should be the real world," he said as they walked out of the theater into the misting rain. "If more people took the bus, busses would be more convenient. Everyone else waits for other people to be the first. We’re showing leadership in the movement toward a sounder and safer planet, Melanie. Think of it that way."

"You’re dreadfully romantic, Phillip," she said sarcastically.

"Really? You think so?" he asked hopefully.

          "No."

They stood alone in the rain waiting for the tram, huddling to stay warm.
