(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) Melanie's ReassuranceMelanie squirted water into the dog’s cage while Phillip played with the German Shepherd pup he’d named Trojan. This was Phillip’s favorite chore at the pet store. He played hide and seek, he let the dog chase him down the aisles, he threw toys for the pup to retrieve. Trojan barked delightedly. Phillip laughed. "Ok, Phillip, it’s your turn," said Melanie. Phillip caught the pup in a great swoop. He petted it to calm it and then gently reintroduced it to the newly-cleaned cage. Melanie opened the next cage and withdrew the Schnauzer puppy; Phillip pulled his bucket close and started to work. "Uh, Phillip," started Melanie. "Yes?" "Martin told me some things today." "Did he." A statement, not a question. "You told me yesterday that you stayed the night with Grant. But Martin tells me it might be a longer-term arrangement," she said, stroking the Schnauzer and then letting it onto the floor. She played tug-of-war with the pup. Phillip sprayed water and ran the rag over the insides of the cage. "I’m just staying over there for a while to get my head on straight. That’s all." "Your head looks pretty straight to me." Phillip laughed sardonically. "You think so?" "Yeah, I do." Something in Melanie’s tone made Phillip back up to look at her. She continued to play with the puppy. He turned back to the cage and said nothing. "So how long are you staying at Grants?" she asked. "Until I’m ready to go home, I guess." "Well, good for you! It’s about time you got your dad to back off." "I wish I felt so sure about it." "I think you’ll be fine." "I hope so." "By the way, are we going out again soon?" Phillip backed out of the cage again. He sat facing Melanie. "That last one was awfully expensive. Can we do something a whole lot cheaper? Like maybe here in Boulder?" She smiled. "Are you done with that cage yet?" "Yes. Your turn." |
