(About Phillip Home) (Last) (Next) Matthew's RequestPhillip held the trophy gingerly as the trio waited for the driver to open the door of the team’s yellow school bus. He turned it over, looked at the back, peered at the bottom and rubbed a fingerprint off the top. It was simple—a bronzed runner atop a simple wood base with a plaque giving the date and event. First place winners for each event received a trophy; Park only picked up two. "You’d think you’d never seen one of those," said Grant. "First in my whole life." He rubbed off another fingerprint. "Of course, Richard has a million of ‘em." "Matthew alert!" said Melanie. The trio turned to face the onslaught. Phillip stood in the middle. Matthew approached nervously. "Nice trophy there, Phillip." "Where’s Luke," demanded Melanie. "Somehow he’s always close by." Matthew turned around as quick as a cat. He surveyed the athletes behind him and those coming up from the fields. Satisfied, he faced the trio. "He’s coming, I guess. But before he gets here," he lowered his voice, "I just want to tell you I’m coming to your church this Sunday." Phillip did a double-take. "You’re coming to our church?" Grant was incredulous. "What time is it?" asked Matthew urgently. Phillip looked at his watch. "About five-thirty." "No, dummy. What time is church on Sunday?" "Oh. Nine o-clock. Lasts ‘til noon." Matthew looked around for Luke. Still satisfied, he turned back to Phillip. "That’s a long meeting." "It’s several meetings. Sacrament, Sunday School, Priesthood." "Do I have to stay for all of them?" Phillip planted his feet firmly in front of Matthew. "Yes. If you’re coming to find out if we’re Christian, then stay for all of them." "What do I wear? I hear Mormons dress up." "White shirt and a tie." "I’ll see what I can do." "Luke’s coming," interjected Melanie quietly. Matthew jumped like a kid caught eating the Christmas cookies. He recovered and held out his hand to Phillip just as Luke joined them. "Good run, Phillip," said Matthew. He backed up to stand behind Luke. Luke didn’t bat an eyelash. He shook Phillip’s hand just as the driver opened the bus door. A sea of red-clad athletes crowded forward. "Amazing feat for a sophomore," said Luke. "You can add that trophy to your collection!" Phillip studied the trophy again. "This is my collection." |
