Matthew's Removal

The door burst open. An angry Simon Christiansen rushed into the room followed by an anxious Brother Sam.

"Why have you separated me from my son?" shouted Simon. "There he is!"

Sister French dropped her book on the floor. The students froze.

Brother Sam was trying to be conciliatory. "Sir, we haven’t hidden him anywhere. He came here with Phillip."

"I demand that you release him!"

"He can come and go freely, sir."

Matthew turned to Phillip. "Sorry. Guess I shouldn’t’ve come." He pushed his way past Simon into the hallway.

Simon glared at Brother Sam. "I’ll thank you to never try brainwashing my son again!" He marched out the door. Brother Sam followed, closing the door behind him.

Sister French picked up her book and adjusted her glasses. "Well! Where were we?"

"Some friend you’ve got there, Phillip," sniggered Jeffrey.

"Hey, he’s the one who wanted to…"

"I know Matthew," said Tracy. "He’s just a bully."

          "Like father, like son."

"Now anyone can repent," said Sister French.

"Is that what it was like back in the early days of the church?" asked Jonathan. " You know, back in Nauvoo and stuff?"

"My grandmother from Germany says the Nazis used to come into church and arrest people. Maybe they were like Matthew’s father," offered Kim.

"My dad didn’t want me to join the church," said Michael. "But he didn’t create a scene like that!"

"Class, we need to get back to the lesson," said Sister French.

"No! Wait," said Tracy, flipping through her copy of the Book of Mormon. "Here’s a good scripture in Mosiah. It says we should stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all places. Doesn’t that even mean in church when there are people like that guy? Can’t we talk about that?"

"I suppose," sighed Sister French. "Ok, here’s a question for all of you. How does persecution strengthen your testimony? You first, Tracy, since you suggested the scripture. Phillip, where are you going?"

"I have to see the bishop. It’s time for my appointment."

          "Ok, go ahead."
