Older But Not Bigger

Dear older but not bigger brother Saint Richard,

A lot’s happened in a week. My head is spinning. I told you last week I was staying the night at Grant’s. Well, one night turned into a week and there’s no end in sight. Mom and Dad came over to Grant’s house to "negotiate" my return, but Dad totally freaked when I told him what’s really on my mind. I don’t think the Havens understood what I’m up against until they got to see him up close and personal. Mom’s really torn up about it, but she totally can’t control Dad. I talked with the bishop during Sunday School today and he’s starting to put the pressure on me to figure out a way to move back in. Like it’s my problem. He says I’ve got to learn to forgive Dad and give him enough space to work through all the pressure he has. Like there’s no pressure on me. I’m discouraged. I don’t see a way to go home, but I really miss Mom and Grams and Wolfgang and even Martin.

Martin’s arm is better, BTW. He always comes up behind me in school and wonks me on the head with his cast, so that must mean he’s not feeling pain anymore. He told me at church today that Grams is almost to the point of throwing things at Dad, she’s so mad. Martin’s scared she’ll have a heart attack or something.

Remember that Matthew kid I told you about? Can you believe this? I told him he should come to our church to see if we’re really Christian. He did!!! I think he was actually interested. He didn’t act at all like a bully today. Except his dad did. His dad makes Genghis Kahn look like a frog. This jerk makes a big scene and yanks Matthew out of Sunday School and hauls him off like a sack of flour. I’ll find out the rest of the story tomorrow at school. This business of having a bully who persecutes me and at the same time shows some interest in the church is like really complicated.

I do have some good news. We had the big North Denver track meet at Fairview on Thursday and guess who got first place for 3200-meter? Yep, your middle brother! I now have my very own very first very official trophy. So move over, older brother! I may even start calling myself a jock if this keeps up. Oh, and there’s more. Guess who set the new track record for 3200-meter at Fairview? Yep, me! (It would be nice if Dad would notice, BTW. Even Mom wasn’t there. Martin was.) Check out my website for a picture of the trophy--aboutphillip.com.

Did I mention I had my first official date now that I’m sixteen? Do you remember Melanie, the girl next door? We went out to dinner and a movie. I think girls are too expensive. Any ideas for cheap dates?

Anyhow, I hope something changes this week. Oh, and regionals are this week. So pray for me to remember my pacing. With all my training I’m getting behind in school and finals are coming up in a couple weeks.

          Love, your **Middle Brother** Phillip
